Ayurvedic Treatment of Throat Allergy

Let us make you familiar with the bitter truth that there is no permanent cure of throat allergies in allopathic treatment

  1. Being Ayurvedic Allergy specialist, we treat patients holistically and render them with a permanent immunity
  2. We have been doing extensive research on allergies from the last 20 years which aids in curing allergies by its roots.

What is Throat Allergy?

Throat Allergy is the allergic reaction of the throat tissue to allergens characterised by accumulation of secretion, throat congestion, itching, pain and difficulty in swallowing. It is usually associated with sneezing, runny nose or blocked nose, watery eyes etc.

How You Catch Throat Allergy?

  1. When you breathe, certain allergy particles (harvesting thresh, dust particles, smoke, pollens etc) reach the throat area causing inflammation reaction in throat tissues. This causes swelling, redness, itching, pain and increased mucus secretion in throat.
  2. In most of the untreated nasal allergy cases, secretion from nose go to throat area causing inflammatory reaction in throat

So, the patient is more likely to suffer from nasal and throat allergy at the same time. This requires an immediate care and should not be ignored.

 Symptoms

Throat allergy is mostly associated with:

  1. Repetitive sneezing
  2. Itching and watery eyes
  3. Difficulty in swallowing and speaking
  4. Coughing
  5. Scratchy feeling in throat
  6. Hoarse voice
  7. Sore and inflamed glands in neck or jaw
  8. Dry cough sometimes with flecks of blood
  9. Long term allopathic treatment for throat and nasal allergy can stimulate stomach repeatedly. This causes reflux of acid back from stomach into the throat which further increases throat inflammation. Reflux of acid from stomach to mouth is called GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Most Common Allergens

  1. Dust mites, dust from old cupboards, curtains, mattresses and brooming.
  2. Molds present in foods or mold spores growth under sinks with leakage, kitchens and other dampened areas.
  3. Pollen production during flowering season of spring.
  4. Cigarette smoke or passive smoking
  5. Pollution and smoke emitted by industries firecrackers, cars and so on.
  6. Pet dander (especially cats and dogs)
  7. Foods: Sometimes throat allergy can also occur due to allergic reaction to certain foods i.e. peanuts, walnuts, sour fruits like oranges, lemons etc.

What Triggers Throat Allergy?

  1. Wheat husk during harvesting season and rice thresh during the paddy season.
  2. Humid areas under the sinks and in the bathrooms.
  3. Opening old cupboards, having old newspapers and damp clothes.
  4. When you sit under a fast running fan or AC.
  5. Coming out from an AC room to a non AC environment.
  6. Unhealthy junk food
  7. Spicy and fried food
  8. Chewing tobacco and drinking alcohol
  9. Chilled and sour foods as well as beverages
  10. Smoke from cooking in the Kitchen (Tadka).
  11. Certain strong smells like perfumes, incense sticks, commonly known as Agarbatti.
  12. In metro cities and during Diwali when the pollution is very high.

Differential Analysis Of Common Throat Pain Vs Allergic Throat

If you are suffering from painful throat, understand whether it is due to allergy or common cold and flu.

Complications

Untreated throat allergy can cause complications:

  1. Chronic throat allergy causes chronic tonsillitis (inflammation/swelling of the tonsils). Furthermore ignorance can lead to development of puss behind the tonsils which obstructs breathing and is life-threatening.
  2. Secretion may drain down the throat into lungs causing pneumonia, allergic bronchitis and asthma.
  3. If not given due attention, congestion in the throat can turn fatal by completely obstructing airways

Why tonsillectomy and anti-allergics can’t permanently cure your throat allergy?

Tonsillectomy, steroids and anti-allergics are symptomatic treatment which may suppress the allergy for a while. But they pose serious side effects and don’t cure the allergy by its roots. So, it is likely for allergy to reoccur. They reduce the body’s immunity by increasing dependence on steroids and can worsen the allergies causing hypertension, diabetes and so on.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Throat Allergy

In ancient Ayurvedic texts, throat allergy has been placed under the category of Kanth Rog. Chronic exposure to allergens may cause Kanth Shoth (swelling and abcess in the throat), Kanth Shaluk (Adenoids), Gal Tundika Shoth (Chronic Tonsillitis) and Swarbhed (Laryngitis). These may cause different signs and symptoms as discussed above. The treatment as discussed in ayurvedic text of various throat allergies are majorly similar to those mentioned in nasal allergies.

Proven Research-Based Home Remedies For Throat Allergy Patients

  1. Put 2-2 drops of pure, Indian bread desi cow ghee in your nostrils as it will prevent allergic reaction in the nasal mucosa. This in turn will reduce the excess secretion of mucus and its accumulation in the throat.
  2. Boil Haridra(Turmeric) in water and gargle before sleeping at night. Holding this mixture in your mouth for a while is also good.
  3. Keeping a small piece of Mulethi in your mouth and chewing it softly for a while also gives soothing effect to the throat.
  4. Massage throat with Til-tel and Sendha Namak as it helps in softening the lymph nodes of the throat.
