Symptoms

Patients may experience one or more of these symptoms after the consumption of trigger foods:

  1. Pain or discomfort in stomach
  2. Gas and bloating
  3. Acidity and constipation
  4. Indigestion
  5. Nausea and headache
  6. Mouth itching
  7. Stuffy or runny nose
  8. Sneezing and wheezing sound in the chest

It may be associated with:

  1. Skin rash i.e. hives and itching
  2. Some people may experience flushing of the face, feeling of vomiting and increase in heart rate as well as pulse rate

Wheat/Gluten Allergy

Out of all the allergies, wheat allergy or gluten allergy is the most concerned one because wheat constitutes a major portion of our daily diet. It is usually diagnosed in children when parents notice negligible or no height growth, pale face with less haemoglobin (less blood level) and the child being underweight. According to a research at the University of Bristol, wheat allergy can even stunt(stop) growth and cause the above listed symptoms in children.

Dairy Products Allergy

Lactase is an enzyme produced in your small intestine. This enzyme breaks down the lactose you consume so that your body can absorb it. People with deficiency of lactase are not able to digest the lactose present in dairy products. This makes them intolerant to dairy products so their body produce symptoms like allergy. The symptoms of allergy to dairy products are the same as the above listed.

Red Wine Allergy

If the person allergic to red wine consumes it then his body will produce symptoms like severe allergic reactions. The patient’s face turns red. Also, he may feel dizzy with headache and the feeling to vomit.

Yeast Allergy

Yeast allergy is the allergic reaction produced by your body on the consumption of certain fermented foods involving yeast. It can have mild to very severe symptoms. The patient may experience abdominal swelling, difficulty in breathing, skin reactions, dizziness, changes in mood, joint pain and widespread body pain

However, feel free to eat protein such as unprocessed meat and fish, green vegetables, beans, potatoes, soda breads as well as drink skim milk, fruit smoothies and squash. These items are yeast-free and won’t pose any danger. But, never forget to check the label.

Sulphite Allergy

Sulphites are preservatives added in foods to prevent discoloration of foods. They are usually used in canned foods, juices, frozen foods, dried fruits, and certain fruits and vegetables. Upon the consumption of foods with sulfite, the patient may experience breathing difficulties, severe headaches, abdominal pain, stuffy/runny nose, diarrhea, irritability, flushing of the face and “hot flash” feeling.

Complications

Untreated food allergy can cause complications:

  1. Retards growth
  2. Lowers haemoglobin count

Self Food Allergy Test

Sit in a relaxed posture and check your pulse for 1 minute. After this, consume trigger food and within 15 minutes, check your pulse yet again.

You’ll observe that your pulse has increased by more than 10 beats.

For eg: Before food, if your pulse was 72

Then after food, your pulse will be 82

This self food allergy test would help you in knowing whether you are allergic to the food or not.

Ayurvedic Perspective Of Food Allergies

According to Ayurveda, food allergy is a hypersensitive reaction towards an irritant leading to discomfort or in extreme case leading to shock which can be life threatening. A food allergen causing allergy to one can be completely normal to another. Each person has different constitution. Certain foods are not compatible with a particular body constitution and result in a reaction, thus an allergic reaction towards that food.

Generally, a bad digestion leads to undigested food accumulation i.e. Ama in the body. But for accumulation of Ama, the role of Jatharagni cannot be ignored.

To keep the Jatharagni and digestion normal, we should stick to eating fresh, organic, seasonal foods and vegetables. Processed and canned foods with preservatives, dyes and chemicals should be avoided. By strengthening Agni and digestion, food allergies can be prevented.

This Ama indigestion reaction is majorly seen in patients of wheat allergy, wheat intolerance, milk intolerance, peanut allergy, red wine allergy, corn allergy, egg, fish, meat, seafood allergies.

Proven Research-Based Home Remedies For Food Allergy Patients

  1. Stop taking the food causing allergies at least till the time you sought treatment and your doctor advises you to start consuming it in small quantities.
  2. Take curd daily twice or thrice a day.
  3. Drink a decoction made from boiling ginger in water and adding a little honey for taste. Have 2-3 cups in a day.
  4. Add lemon to a glass of warm water and drink it as the first thing in the morning.
  5. Prefer taking an Ayurvedic tea over Green Tea for boosting up your immune system.
