Ayurvedic Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis

Rhinitis (also known as Allergic rhinitis, purana jukam, hay fever or sneezing) is the common condition which causes woe in many people’s life. In India, about 20-30% of the population suffer from allergic rhinitis. People usually seek allopathic treatment to overcome it. But, sadly there’s no treatment of allergic rhinitis in allopathy so people get fed up and keep on switching between the doctors.

What is allergic rhinitis?

Most Common Allergy Particles Which Cause Rhinitis:

  1. Dust mites i.e. extremely tiny bugs that feed off of house dust
  2. Pollen from flowers i.e. hay fever.
  3. Pollution
  4. Dust particles from old cupboards, old newspapers, old curtains, while cleaning and so on.
  5. Mold spores in humid areas like kitchen, bathrooms, basement and uncut grass.
  6. Smoke from industries, cigarettes and burning something.
  7. Passive smoking
  8. Smog from stubble burning
  9. Pet dander especially contact with pet dogs and cats

Trigger Factors:

  1. Pollen suspension such as wheat husk and rice thresh in harvesting and paddy season respectively.
  2. High humidity during rainy season.
  3. Moisture-laden clothes, mattresses and other dampened stuff.
  4. Sitting under a fast running fan or AC.
  5. Smoke from cooking in the Kitchen (Tadka).
  6. Coming out from an AC room to a non AC environment.
  7. Perfumes and incense sticks(Agarbatti) which emit strong smells.
  8. Pollution in cities and during Diwali season.
  9. Reaction to certain foods such as yeast, wheat, milk products, fish, etc.

Complications:

Often, people tend to ignore the symptoms but untreated allergic rhinitis can cause enlisted complications:

  1. Prolonged allergic rhinitis furthermore leads to chest allergy or allergic bronchitis and asthma. According to the Nutritional Healing, America’s #1 Guide to Natural Healing, more than 50% of the asthmatic patients have previous history of nasal allergy.
  2. It can lead to outgrowth of nasal mucosa which forms polyps in the nose. This further obstructs breathing and increases the allergy.
  3. It can cause sinusitis.
  4. Patients become dependent on antibiotics, steroidal inhalers and pumps which reduces their immunity and causes permanent shrinkage of lungs.
  5. It can cause congestion in the ears. This further puts pressure on eardrum and can cause hearing loss or ear infection.
  6. The phlegm or nasal secretions draining into the throat can cause tonsillitis also.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Allergic Rhinitis

In ancient Ayurvedic texts, allergic rhinitis comes under the category of Dusht Pratishay (an imbalance between the Pitta and Kapha Doshas). The Ojas i.e. the immunity and the Jatharagni i.e. the digestive fire should be taken care of while treating a patient suffering from allergic rhinitis.  Chitrak(Plumbago zeylanica), Haridra(Curcuma longa), Tulsi(Ocimum sanctum), Pippali(Piper longum) and Amla(Phyllanthus emblica) are the herbal medicines which are commonly used for the treatment.

Proven Research-Based Home Remedies for Allergic Rhinitis

  1. Put 2-2 drops of Indian breed desi cow ghee in nostrils every morning. If you feel that the ghee is entering your throat then apply with finger. The ghee makes a protective coat in nasal mucosa so the allergy causing particles cannot touch your nasal mucosa. Thus, ghee coat keeps allergies at bay.
  2. Make a decoction of 2 gm of pure turmeric in a cup of cow’s milk. This prepares the body to fight against allergic rhinitis.
  3. Giloy plant also aids in lessening respiratory ailments.
  4. Preparations made from Amla and Tulsi are also recommended for patients suffering from allergic rhinitis.
  5. “Pipli Doogdh Paak” is a potent natural home remedy. To prepare this decoction, boil Pipali (piper longum) in 1 cup of cow’s milk and also, add 1 cup of water to it. Let it boil till 1 cup of milk is left. Strain and consume it.
  6. Consume 1 spoon of honey mixed with 1 spoon of ginger juice twice a day for optimal health.
  7. Have 2 gm of liquorice (Mulethi) and mix it with honey or warm water. It is efficacious in healthy functioning of the body.
